How do tax returns and refunds work?

I am working for minimum wage (8.50), with my paycheck being directly deposited into my bank account. I understand that a percentage of each paycheck is withheld for different taxes and services, and also that I can get some of it back somehow. How does this work? (By the way, I am 19, dependent live with my parents, single, live in Oregon, etc.)
