Internet signal is horrible?

So I am directly below my modem. However my laptops wireless connection cuts out every 2 minutes. Is there anyway of improving this? Maybe opening a window or putting the modem closer to a window. It may be slower because of the metal in the floor boards possibly? (if there is metal) any help would be appreciated
